UPHOLSTERY CARE

Upholstered furniture is often the centerpiece of your living room, family room or den and the most prominent and frequently used furniture item in the home. If you’ll spend a few minutes caring for your furniture, you’ll be rewarded with years of durability and enjoyment.  Here’s how to make the most out of your investment.

EVERY DAY CARE

  • The same dust that settles on your side table is also settling on your sofa – it’s just harder to see! Thoroughly vacuum the fabric every few weeks, even if it's been treated with fabric protection. This will clean the soil and dust that can eventually damage the fabric.
  • Flip your cushions over and rotate them regularly to even out the wear and make the inner cushion and the fabric last longer.
  • Try not to put upholstered pieces in direct sunlight, where ultraviolet rays will cause fading. Use sheers or blinds to minimize sun damage.
  • Fluff the arms and back of your upholstered furniture to keep the fibers in place. Starting at the bottom of the arms and back, push the filling upward. This works air back into the synthetic fibers and keeps it nice and cushy.

RECLINERS AND SLEEPERS

  • Do not jump on the footrest or twist it. This may cause permanent damage. The footrest is designed to support the weight of your feet, not your entire body.
  • Never force the mechanism if a sleeper or recliner won't open or close easily. Check for loose bolts or foreign objects that might be causing the jam.
  • Sit in the center of your recliner. It was designed to support your weight in the middle of the cushion with your back resting on the backrest. This will allow the reclining mechanism to operate smoothly and easily. If you consistently favor one side of the chair, it will eventually lean to that side.
  • Occasionally inspect the mechanism by tilting the chair forward. Check for bolts and screws that may have come loosened with use. Check sleepers by opening the mechanism and removing the mattress.

EMERGENCY CARE

  • For liquid spills, blot the area with a clean, dry, absorbent, 100% cotton cloth. Use a white cloth, because dyed cloth may bleed onto the fabric. Dab at the spill, don’t rub it into the fabric. Always check the Cleaning Code for complete instructions.
  • Never wash cushion casings (covers) even if they have zippers and are removable. They will shrink and fade. Only use spot cleaning procedures according to the Cleaning Code (see box), or take the entire cushion to a professional upholstery cleaner.
  • Lightly soiled upholstery can be spot-cleaned according the fabric’s Cleaning Code (see box). Contact a professional for the best results on serious stains or wear.

CLEANING CODES

  • Each cover has a cleaning code for proper care and maintenance. Just as you would consider the cleaning instructions for clothing, you should ensure that your lifestyle and the way you’ll use your upholstered furniture are compatible with the fabric’s care and cleaning guidelines.

These codes are usually on the manufacturers label on the seat deck or underneath the item.

S Spot clean using only a water-free cleaning solvent
W Spot cleaning using only a water-based upholstery shampoo or foam cleaner
WS Spot clean using a water-based upholstery shampoo, foam cleaner or mild dry cleaning solvent
X Vacuum only, or use a light brush. DO NOT use water or cleaning solvents

These cleaning methods should be followed even if the fabric has been treated with any type of fabric protection. Always test the cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area to make sure it will not cause any damage to the fabric. Blot, do not rub, stains with a white cloth moistened with the appropriate cleaning solution. The fabric should be moist but not saturated; don’t soak through to the cushion or filler. Use cleaning solutions at room temperature or colder; hot solutions may cause the fabric to shrink or fade.

LEATHER CARE

Leather furniture is a luxurious investment for your home that will last for years. While more expensive than upholstery, leather furniture is also four to five times more durable than fabric. Leather is tough enough to withstand years of usage in your home, yet leather is soft and comfortable. If cared for correctly, leather furniture won't crack, peel, lose its shape or sag.

Leather is a natural product with subtle texture variations, unique grain and distinctive markings that add to its character. Each leather hide will have different markings for you to appreciate, none of which affect its durability or quality. These are not defects and do not affect the wear or warranty of your leather furniture.

EVERY DAY CARE

  • Leather hides are processed in three different ways, and the processing methods affect the leather’s character, care and cost. Ask your salesperson to identify the type of leather on your new furniture, or find the manufacturer’s label on the seat deck, under a cushion or underneath the piece to locate its cleaning code. Never use soaps or alcohol-based products on leather furniture, as these will dry out the leather and shorten its life.
  • Full aniline leather (Cleaning Code A) creates a sumptuous, rich look in your room. It’s soft and supple and develops a deep patina over time. Full aniline leather is soaked in dye, but each hide will accept the color differently. It usually carries a premium price because only the best quality rawhides are used (about 3-5% of the total supply). Furniture made with full aniline leather is usually full leather with no “leathermatch.” Leathermatch is the term for using leather on the furniture seat and matching vinyl on the sides and back, resulting in a more affordable choice. Dust or vacuum aniline leather frequently using a crevice tool on the seams. Apply a leather conditioner at least twice a year or after using a leather cleaner, following label directions.
  • Nubuck leather (Cleaning Code N) is premium quality that you’ll prize for its warmth, softness and luxurious texture. The outer layer of a nubuck the hide is lightly sanded. This creates a brushed, velvety feel while leaving the natural marks and grain variations of the hide intact. Nubuck leather is sometimes called “chaps” or “distressed” leather. Most spills on nubuck leather will bead up and wipe off, but nubuck leather is more susceptible to stains and signs of excessive wear than other leather finishes. Vacuum nubuck leather furniture frequently using a crevice tool on the seams.
  • Protected or semi-aniline leather (Cleaning Code P) will see you through years of enjoyable use. Protected leather easily withstands occasional spills because it is treated to be durable, stain-resistant and easy to clean and care for. Protected leather is the perfect choice for your busy family room or media center. This finish has more uniform color and texture and is less expensive, but still has the desirable graining that makes leather unique. Protected leather should be dusted or vacuumed frequently using a crevice tool on the seams. Wipe off surface dirt every two weeks with a clean white cloth dampened with water and apply a leather conditioner at least twice a year following label directions.

EMERGENCY CARE

CLEANING CODE A: FULL ANILINE LEATHER

Blot spills gently with a clean white cloth as soon as possible. If the liquid has been absorbed by the leather, dampen a clean white cloth with distilled water and gently massage the area. This will remove as much liquid as possible and will dilute the stain. Do not rub. Air dry.

CLEANING CODE N: NUBUCK LEATHER

Blot spills gently with a clean white cloth as soon as possible. If the liquid has been absorbed by the leather, dampen a clean white cloth with distilled water and gently massage the area. This will remove as much liquid as possible and will dilute the stain. Do not rub. Air dry.

CLEANING CODE P: PROTECTED OR SEMI-ANILINE LEATHER

Blot spills gently with a clean white cloth (may be dampened with water) as soon as possible. Most spills will be removed very easily. If the leather appears to be stained, use a solution of mild soap (Ivory, Neutrogena) on a slightly damp cloth. Wipe the area gently, do not rub. residue reside with another clean cloth dampened in water, then dry with a dry cloth.

WOOD CARE

Your home will glow with the natural beauty and richness of solid wood furniture. Proper care will enhance its loveliness and make it last for generations.

EVERY DAY CARE

  • Dust your wood furniture regularly with a soft cotton cloth and wax-free polish. Dry dusting without polish or an abrasive cloth will cause hairline scratches that will dull your furniture over time.
  • Wipe wood and formica dining tables with a slightly damp cloth, then DRY the surfaces immediately with a dry cloth. Excess moisture can quickly penetrate the finish and raise the grain or cause the laminate to separate.
  • Protect wood tabletops from dents, scratches and heat damage by using coasters, placemats or a custom-fitted dining table pads (ask your salesperson for details).
  • Use felt pads under lamps, accessories, candlesticks, etc., to avoid scratches.
  • Keep drawers opening smoothly by running a bar of soap or paraffin on the drawer glides and the two bottom edges of each drawer. Make sure drawers are set properly into the drawer glides when reinstalling.
  • Lift furniture to move it; do not slide it. Take headboards and footboards apart to move beds. Do not move dining room tables alone; have one person left each end. Pushing or pulling heavy furniture can damage the legs.
  • Level your furniture to make sure drawers work properly and doors hang straight. Most floors are not completely level, but a small shim or wedge under one leg or corner of your furniture will usually correct any problems.
  • Store table extension leaves flat, under a bed or on a closet floor, to prevent warping. Always have someone help you install and remove the leaves.

EMERGENCY CARE

  • Soak up any spills immediately, then clean the surface with a slightly damp cloth and dry it with a dry cloth. Spills can quickly penetrate the finish and raise the grain. Pull dining tabletops apart and wipe and dry all edges and any leaves.
  • Avoid direct sunlight which can lighten and fade the finish over time.
  • Avoid extremes such as very high or very low humidity or temperatures, which can cause wood to warp or split and cause veneers to separate. High humidity can also produce a haze on some finishes. Use a humidifier in the winter and an air conditioner in the summer, and make sure to keep all wood furniture at least six inches (6”) away from any heat source like a furnace vent or fireplace.
  • Avoid using solvents like hair spray, perfume or nail polish remover near your wood furniture. These will cause immediate and irreparable damage.
  • Avoid placing plastic or rubber materials on wood furniture, including silicone potholders or trivets, which can cause a chemical reaction that may leave a permanent mark or stain.

MATTRESS CARE

New mattresses and box springs from Star Furniture mean you’re about to experience your best rest yet.

A new mattress placed on an old foundation can appear to sag. We highly recommend a new box spring or foundation with your new mattress, even if your old box spring had a “lifetime warranty.” Such warranties protect you from manufacturing or structural defects for a specified time; they do not indicate how long a sleep set should last. Although you may not be able to see it, old springs lose their strength and support after eight to ten years.

New mattresses are thicker and might sit higher off the floor than your old bedding. You can get a “low-profile” foundation or bed frame to lower the surface level. This extra plush thickness might also mean you need new “deep pocket” sheets or sheet suspenders, clips that keep your bottom sheet secure.

New bedding often has a distinctive smell that will dissipate in a few days. Leave your new mattress uncovered in a ventilated area for a few hours. You might also notice minor imperfections in your new mattress that do not affect the warranty or performance of your sleep set. After sleeping on your new mattress for a few months, you’ll notice that it conforms to the impression of your body. This is also not a defect and is to be expected as the multiple layers of cushioning compress slightly with use.

Proper care of your new mattress will help you sleep soundly and wake up refreshed for years to come.

EVERY DAY CARE

  • Please use a mattress pad on your new bedding. This is essential to protecting your mattress and your warranty. All bedding manufacturers’ warranties are void if the bedding is stained, regardless of the reason for the warranty claim. Invest in a quality, washable mattress pad to keep your sleep set fresh and free from stains.
  • Use a sturdy bed frame or rails. Queen- or king-sized bedding also needs a center support to prevent bowing or breaking. Mattress manufacturers will not honor warranties if the bedding has not been properly supported.
  • Use the hose on your vacuum cleaner to thoroughly clean the surfaces of your mattress every month.

EMERGENCY CARE

  • Your sleep set was not built to withstand a concentration of weight in one area, so don’t allow jumping or standing on the bed. Your warranty will not cover any damage from misuse.
  • Don’t bend the mattress. Carefully flex or curve a mattress when moving it around corners, and locate the specific hinging points found on most king-sized mattresses.
  • Don’t lift the mattress by the handles. They handles are designed to help you position the mattress when it’s lying flat on the foundation; they are not for carrying.
  • Use mild soap, cold water and a damp cloth to spot-clean stains. Do not saturate the bedding with water. Don’t use dry cleaning agents or spot removers to clean the mattress.
